Abstracts:

  • While national headlines frequently have captured the fast advance of integrated and mobile healthcare technology that make usable information readily available to providers, lesser attention has been given to the clinical engineering (CE) and healthcare technology management (HTM) contributions to this area
  • CE and HTM have provided the means and methods so that critical patient diagnostic and treatment information is safely, accurately, and securely available for timely use by providers. This device-integration framework is indispensable, for example, to achieving the Meaningful Use objectives
  • This symposium will connect the dots for vendors, clinical engineers, biomedical managers and technicians, care providers, administrators, and other stakeholders to document and highlight joint involvement for improving patient clinical outcomes

In October, 2011, a group of 300 dedicated and diverse individuals came together at the AAMI/FDA Medical Device Alarms Summit to establish a plan of action to identify, prioritize and reduce issues associated with medical device alarms. Attendees from hospitals, medical device manufacturers, the FDA, academia, and other stakeholders engaged in two days of discussion and outlined the priorities. In this two-part session, you will learn about the outcomes from the summit, activities since the event, and the important issues that have been uncovered regarding alarm safety.

IHE PCD at AAMI Exhibit Floor, Booth# 1129

  • Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE)'s Patient Care Devices domain (PCD), cosponsored by ACCE, AAMI and HIMSS, will demonstrate standards-based interoperable communications
  • Speak with a few of the PCD conforming vendors; learn about the many types of data using standards-based messages which are vendor independent that are now available
  • Learn about specifying and purchasing devices and systems on the market that actually speak the same language to send physiologic, alarm, and device data and the ability to bind/unbind the device to the patient's medical record
  • Discuss interoperable messages under development that directly support clinical engineering: device condition information sent to CMMS systems (e.g., self-test results, battery condition, availability) and (hopefully soon) location
  • Discuss the User Handbook as well as work in process to meet additional clinical and CE needs such as medical device Cybersecurity
  • You can find more information about the IHE at www.ihe.net and about the PCD at www.ihe.net/pcd. You can actively participate in defining interoperable solutions by contacting pcd@accenet.org
